For clinicians who are looking for a supportive work environment, a team-based culture and a healthy work-life balance, Indigo offers a better way to provide care.
We recently sat down with Joe Bailey, Physician Assistant (PA-C) and Indigo Medical Director, to learn more about the benefits PAs can expect as part of the Indigo team. Bailey oversees Indigo’s Lakeland Hills, Milton, Stadium, Point Ruston, University Place, Poulsbo and Gig Harbor clinic locations.
What’s it like to work in urgent care?
I think urgent care is a great place to work if you like a fast-paced environment and variety of clinical medicine. I can honestly say that no two days are the same, which definitely keeps you on your toes and engaged.
On any given day, we may see a young soccer player with a minor fracture, treat someone with a respiratory illness, help a patient with a chronic condition manage their symptoms, or stabilize someone for transfer to a hospital.
People usually come to us with a specific issue that we can address quickly, which is so rewarding. There’s no better feeling than being able to offer immediate help and see the relief on a patient’s face.
What makes Indigo Urgent Care unique?
I love that Indigo is all about patient-centered care that’s amazingly friendly and easy.
Even when people aren’t feeling well, they’re usually happy from the moment they connect with Indigo, whether that’s virtually or in person. They appreciate the special touches that make their lives easier, like same- and next-day appointments, convenient locations, efficient waiting rooms and exam suites, and little perks like getting text messages so they can wait more comfortably in their car. Most of the time, they’re already feeling positive about their care experience by the time they see a clinician.
Combined with that friendly approach, we’re also at the forefront of technology and innovation, which helps us meet people where they are and provide the care they need on their terms.
Why do you think physician assistants like working for Indigo?
There are a lot of good reasons why PAs who join our team stick around.
I would definitely say the collaborative team environment that Indigo has built is one of the biggest benefits of the job. Our staff training model is designed to make each day as seamless and smooth as possible, and our robust consultation plan ensures that each PA has the support they need. A medical director is always available for questions or complex clinical situations.
The work-life balance is also really great. PAs work 12-hour shifts, and when you are off, you’re off. There are no after-hours calls or managing in-baskets.
What is your role with Indigo?
As a medical director, I’m responsible for overall quality of care and management across our provider group. That includes anything from dealing with patient concerns, consultations and provider support, to developing new policies and procedures.
I see patients in our clinics once or twice a week or help with clinician training and development to make sure we’re consistently providing an amazing experience for our patients. And when we’re looking to bring new providers on board, I’m also in charge of interviewing process.
Do you have an inspiring experience at Indigo you’d like to share?
There have been many inspiring stories here, but one definitely stands out.
A woman in her 20s came into one of our clinics with a breast lump. She didn’t have a primary care doctor, but we were able to arrange her imaging and follow-up care and help her navigate the process. Ultimately, the diagnosis wasn’t what she had hoped for, but it was really meaningful to be there for her and offer the support she needed.
What are your personal hobbies and passions?
I’m a sports dad at heart. I serve on our local little league board of directors, coach my son’s soccer team, and I’m involved with my daughter’s softball including traveling to tournaments in and out of state. As a self-avowed weekend warrior, I also love to tackle home projects, especially in the yard. I also like to hike and spend time outdoors, so the Pacific Northwest is a great place to live and work.
With the flexibility Indigo offers, I have the time to enjoy it all.
