Fireworks and sparklers are a fan favorite over the Fourth of July holiday, but did you know more than 3,000 children under the age of 15 are injured each year in the United States because of these fiery-hot pyrotechnics?
And you may be surprised to learn that the harmless looking sparklers account for one-third of all injuries to children under five. If handled improperly, fireworks and sparklers can cause bodily burns and eye injuries.
Protect your children and watch the sparks fly from a distance by going to public and professional firework displays instead. You can also give your holiday an extra (safe) spark with these kid-friendly firework and sparkler alternatives:
- LED sparklers
- Glow sticks
- Confetti poppers
- Bubbles
- Silly string (a favorite for kids of all ages!)
If you plan to use fireworks* and sparklers at home, here are a few safety tips to keep in mind:
1) An adult should always handle the fireworks or sparklers. Never allow children to play with, hold or ignite them. Closely supervise children when in use.
2) Always have a bucket of water and fire extinguisher nearby.
3) Point fireworks and sparklers away from people, homes and flammable materials, such as grass and clothing.
4) Buy legal fireworks and sparklers. Never try to make your own.
*Ensure fireworks are legal in your area first.
