Between remote work, virtual school and online happy hours, kids and adults alike are spending more time on the computer lately. You’re not alone if you’re feeling some eye strain and fatigue. But when eye problems turn ugly and have you hiding from your webcam, you might consider a trip to the doctor.
At Indigo Urgent Care, our team sees and treats hundreds, yes – hundreds, of these common eye problems every month.
1. Pink eye
Think it might be pink eye? The first step is to look around. Bacterial and viral pink eye are very contagious, so you may see similar symptoms in others in your household.
Symptoms of pink eye:
- blurry vision
- itching
- redness
- inflammation
- watery eyes or pus around your eye
Bacterial pink eye often requires a doctor’s visit ( or in persononline) to get treatment. Your doctor may prescribe antibiotic eyedrops for proper healing and provide other options to help relieve symptoms.
Viral pink eye will generally clear on its own, but it could take a couple of weeks to run its course.
If you're experiencing a lot of irritation and discomfort, or your symptoms aren't going away, don't hesitate to consult with a doctor about the best treatment options.
2. Stye
More common in children, a stye is often caused when an oil gland in the eyelid becomes infected.
Symptoms of a stye:
- a raised bump on your eyelid
- eye pain
- watery eyes
- swelling
- sensitivity to light
- a gritty feeling in your eye
Treat a stye at home by applying clean, warm compresses to the area up to 5 times per day. In case you were thinking about it, please don’t try to “pop” the stye.
Call Urgent Care if symptoms don’t improve after a few days. Our providers may be able to prescribe an antibiotic or drain the stye, if needed. your neighborhood Indigo
3. Allergies
Allergies aren’t just for springtime. In fact, itchy, red and irritated eyes due to allergies can linger all year long in Washington State (aren’t we lucky?!).
Symptoms of allergies:
- redness
- consistently itchy eyes
- watery eyes
- burning or dry feeling
- sensitivity to light
- may occur in conjunction with sneezing, wheezing or runny nose
Several treatments can help calm your mild or moderate allergy symptoms. If over-the-counter medications aren’t working, an Indigo provider may be able to prescribe an antihistamine or other medications. If symptoms worsen or you are having a severe allergic reaction, visit your nearest emergency room right away.
